Producer: Santanu Mishra

Starring: Harsh Mayar, Gulshan Grover, Pitobash Tripathy, Husaan Saad,

Beatrice Ordeix, Meena Mir, Sanjay Chauhan,

Release Date: 05-08-2011

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

The title of the film itself describes what is the story all about. The film is a tale enthused by the maverick leader, India’s former president Dr Abdul Kalam.

The film traces the life of Chottu (Harsh Mayar), a poor kid with a million dollar smile. He is very sharp and interested in studies, but his mother can't afford to send him to school. So, at an age when children play with toys, he starts working in a small road side food stall under Bhati (Gulshan Grover).

Also working with him at the stall is the hardcore Amitabh Bachchan fan, Laptan (Pitobash Tripathy) who never leaves a chance to bully him. After listening to a speech by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, Chottu changes his own name to Kalam and starts working towards his dream of becoming a bada aadmi one day.

Through an engaging, entertaining and fast-paced, fable-like narrative, the film takes the viewer to the world of Chhotu, who at one point starts

referring to himself as Kalam after watching on TV, Kalam speak about how he got his education fighting several odds.

He befriends a local price Ranvijay Singh (Hussan Saad), who hails from a royal family. The two kids become the best of friends and start helping each other. Ranvijay teaches Kalam English while Kalam teaches him Hindi. What follows is a heartwarming story about friendship, perseverance and pursuing dreams.

Nila Madhab Panda's directorial debut is a sweet little gem. It's one of those rare films that is simple and yet very moving. It shows in an absolutely non-preachy way that dreams do come true. And it's karma and not kismat that helps in fulfilling one's dreams. The narrative includes many brilliant moments that you'll remember for a long time. It also tackles the menace of child labour in a very mature way.

A sensitive film on the plight of the underprivileged, it is also about how the privileged class can play a role in the uplift of the less-privileged millions.

Phhir (2011)

Director: Girish Dhamija

Producer: Vikram Bhatt

Starring: Rajneesh Duggal, Adah Sharma, Roshni Chopra,

Release Date: 12-08-2011

*******************************************************************************************

Girish Dhamija's Phhir which stars Rajneesh Duggal, Adah Sharma, and Roshni Chopra -- always seems to keep you curious about what is happening, so much so that it virtually makes up for everything that falls short.

The irony is, despite a marginal plot, simplified dialogue, and not-so-spectacular acting; Phhir will suck you in and make you watch the film until the very end just to find out what happened.

Set in a variety of locations across England, Phhir starts off vaguely following a man whose face is never revealed (until much later in the film, that is). Moments after he is introduced, the mystery man kills himself. The film’s central characters enter right after, with Kabir (Duggal) and his bride-to-be Sia (Chopra) dancing to an item number. After the loving couple parts ways for work, Kabir soon becomes worrisome when Sia is suddenly nowhere to be found.

Disha (Adah Sharma) comes into the picture to help Kabir to solve the mystery of what happened to Sia.

In many ways, Phhir seems like a shot straight out of 1980s Bollywood, and to make the film more relevant to today's audience the director has

incorporated the principles of Karma and the Bhagvad Gita.

Oddly enough, there is some entertainment value in sitting through 95 minutes of a convoluted story with questionable acting and overly simplified dialogue just to discover the truth behind Sia’s fate. For some, the story’s mystery is so compelling and the climactic moments in the film are so well-timed, there is enough enjoyment to take out of Phhir to justify its viewing. The power of curiosity is not to be underestimated, as Phhir is living proof.

Enhancing the mystery is, indeed, the aforementioned climaxes. Dhamija does a pretty decent job of pacing the film. Just when the movie appears as if it's about to drag, or you think you've had it with Disha’s questionable visions, a new reveal presents itself, ergo bringing you right back to asking that question: “what the heck happened to Sia?!”

Of course, the reveals take on a very different nature after intermission, as a major clue drops into the audience’s lap right before the break.

After all, that old idiom about curiosity killing the cat is completed by its rejoinder that “satisfaction brought it back.”

Relativity Media Launches Strategic Partnership in China

Relativity Media is joining with China’s Huaxia Film Distribution Co. and SkyLand (Beijing) Film-Television Culture Development to launch a strategic partnership to create the first joint venture that will handle distribution along with film production and financing in both the China and the U.S.

SkyLand, a film and multimedia production, distribution and financing company, which was jointly owned and controlled by Asian private-equity firm SAIF Partners and IDG China Media, the China-focused investment arm of Boston’s International Data Group, is now also owned by Relativity.

SkyLand is also partnered with a China-based renminbi fund to co-invest in local film and television content and production, with a budget equivalent to $100 million. Specific ownership percentages were not provided, although Relativity as a foreign partner would be prohibited from owning an equal or majority stake.

Relativity, SAIF and IDG China plan to develop, produce, acquire and distribute Chinese material with worldwide appeal.

"The very idea of Skyline is to have a fully functioning studio…other studios would be able to walk in and feel like they are operating in the U.S.," said Relativity founder and CEO Ryan Kavanaugh in a telephone conference.

Relativity will distribute all of its future films in China, including Immortals, Haywire, Act of Valor, its Untitled Snow White Project, and The Raven, through SkyLand. Kavanaugh, said that while all those films would be distributed in China by the joint venture's partner Huaxia, they would still pass through Chinese censorship and adhere to its revenue-share quota system of 20 foreign films per year.

"We don't want to deal with the quota systen iim the future, we want to make global films," Kavanaugh said, specifically co-productions that would be classified as a Chinese production under local distribution rules.

"There will still be censorship, but because our partner is part of that process, they can sit in a room and listen to what [the censors] want and why," Kavanaugh said. Only Huaxia and China Film Group, both of which are state-owned, are authorized to import and distribute foreign films in China. Kavanaugh drew a line between his company's new venture and a June co-production agreement between Legendary Entertainment and China's Huayi Brothers, stating that the Monday deal included an "unprecedented" distribution component. He said the deal was worked out with SAIF Partners' managing partner Andy Yan in a 10-hour session in Beijing, after the two spent significant time together at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

SkyLand has functioned as SAIF and IDG's entertainment arm, and most-recently co-produced Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, inspired by the novel by Lisa See, directed by Wayne Wang, which was released stateside by Fox Searchlight.

“China is the fastest-growing film market in the world, with over 6,000 screens and over $1.5 billion in box office revenue last year, an increase of over 60% last year alone. We’re excited to be entering into this booming market with such great partners in SAIF, IDG and our new strategic partnership with Huaxia. Given the substantial platform created by SAIF and IDG in SkyLand, we believe together we can grow a distribution business in China which brings global product to China, and brings Chinese product to the global market,” Kavanaugh said.

Kavanaugh, Huaxia Film’s executive chairman Guoqin Gu, SAIF's Yan and IDG China Media’s founding partner Hugo Shong announced the initiatives Monday at a press conference in Beijing.

"This partnership will broaden the cooperation platform introducing significant resource for the co-production of future movies while allowing us to build on valuable movie production experiences from overseas. Meanwhile, such partnership will also open the channels for Chinese movies to air globally and offer international audiences a better understanding of Chinese culture,” Gu said.

Aarakshan (2011)

Director: Prakash Jha,

Producer: Prakash Jha, Firoz Nadiadwala

Starring: Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan, Manoj Bajpayee, Deepika Padukone, Prateik Babbar,

Release Date: 12-08-2011

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Prakash Jha film has always left an indelible impression on the minds of the viewer. So, quite naturally, the expectations from his new release AARAKSHAN are massive.

Aarakshan, revolves around Prabhakar Anand (Amitabh Bachchan), who has been the pillar of a private college in Bhopal for more than 30 years. The idealistic principal believes in merit, but at the same time is considerate towards poor students who can't score great marks. Deepak (Saif Ali Khan) who is immensely helped by Prabharkar, is in love with his daughter, Poorbi (Deepika Padukone). Sushant (Prateik) is a good friend of Poorbi and studies in the same college.

Based on one of the most controversial issues of Reservation the story becomes a rollercoaster ride of high drama and conflict which tests their love and friendship for one another and their loyalty to Prabhakar Anand.

Prabhakar lands in a tough spot when he makes a comment in a newspaper on the Supreme Court's order on reservation. After a much drama he resigns from his post giving way to the scheming Mithilesh Singh (Manoj Bajpai), who's part of the institute but concentrates more on his private coaching classes. Due to his evil plans, Prabhakar and his family are evenforced to give up their home. Will Prabhakar be able to gain back all the respect is what the story reveals.

The film takes quite a long to time to convey the message. The first half of the film has been narrated pretty well while the second half looses the grip of the film and diverts from the track.

The conflict between Amitabh and Manoj is well presented and moves to the next level in the second hour. The film loses the clutch and switch from the issue in the second half. The scenes become repetitive post interval.

The chemistry between Saif and Deepika is flawless. Amitabh and Deepika who shares a father and daughter relationship in the film have been captured incredibly.

Amitabh Bachchan delivers an outstanding performance and fits the role to the T.

Saif Ali Khan acts well while Deepika Padukone has done a decent job. Manoj Bajpai plays his subdued negative character to perfection. Prateik needs to improve a lot. Hema Malini's cameo looks graceful.

Though the film is convincing, but the running time to almost 2.45 hours may be irritating. Aarakshan attempts to convey a significant message to bring revolution in the society.
